- ✓Minor depression symptoms persisting for at least 6 months
- ✓Meets partial DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorder (one 'A' criterion plus ≥1 other symptom, or both 'A' criteria)
- ✓HAM-D-17 score between 10 and 17 (inclusive)
- ✓Functional impairment demonstrated by GAF score <70 or SF-36 social/emotional role functioning ≤75% or ≤67%

- ✕Major depressive disorder or dysthymia within the past year, or current partial remission of MDD
- ✕Prior adequate treatment course (≥12 weeks) with citalopram ≥40 mg/day or St. John's Wort ≥900 mg/day in current episode
- ✕History of intolerance or nonresponse to citalopram ≥40 mg/day or St. John's Wort ≥900 mg/day for ≥12 weeks
- ✕Unstable medical illness (cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, respiratory, endocrine, neurologic, hematologic disease)
