  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus for ≤10 years duration
  • Pre-screening HbA1c >6.5%
  • Fasting plasma glucose 110-240 mg/dL after 2 weeks of metformin 500 mg twice daily
Key exclusion· 12
  • Thiazolidinedione or sulfonylurea use within previous 30 days (unless washed out)
  • Known contraindications to thiazolidinedione or sulfonylurea
  • Subcutaneous insulin use
  • Elevated liver enzymes (≥2.5× upper limit of reference range)
