  • ✓Primary diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder per DSM-IV criteria, confirmed by MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview
  • ✓Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) score ≥20 at baseline
  • ✓Clinical Global Impressions Severity (CGS) score ≥4
Key exclusion· 9
  • ✕Current diagnosis of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, other psychotic disorder, mental retardation, pervasive developmental disorder, or cognitive disorder due to general medical condition
  • ✕History of substance abuse or dependence within the last 6 months
  • ✕Suicidal ideation or serious suicide attempt within the last year
  • ✕Clinically significant medical condition or laboratory abnormality
